I Am Australian

Harmony Day celebrations at Tighes Hill PS will be on Friday, 22nd of March (Week 8). I thought this would be a lovely opportunity to sing 'I Am Australian'. We will be performing a shortened version of the song. Here is my favourite version featuring the voices of Jess Mauboy, Dami Im, Justice Crew, Nathaniel, Samantha Jade, and Taylor Henderson from 2014.

Lyrics by Bruce Woodley and David Newton

I came from the Dreamtime
From the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart
The keeper of the flame
I stood upon the rocky shores
I watched the tall ships come
For forty thousand years I've been
The first Australian

I'm a teller of stories
I'm a singer of songs
I am Albert Namatjira
And I paint the ghostly gums
I'm Clancy on his horse
I'm Ned Kelly on the run
I'm the one who waltzed Matilda
I am Australian

We are one
But we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We'll share a dream
And sing with one voice
I am, you are, we are Australian

I'm the hot wind from the desert
I'm the black soil of the plains
I'm the mountains and the valleys
I'm the drought and flooding rains
I am the rock, I am the sky
The rivers when they run
The spirit of this great land
I am Australian

We are one
But we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We'll share a dream
And sing with one voice
I am, you are, we are Australian

We are one
But we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We'll share a dream
And sing with one voice
I am, you are, we are Australian

We are one
But we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We'll share a dream
And sing with one voice
I am, you are, we are Australian

I am
You are
We are Australian

Dog Days Are Over, by Florence and the Machine

This term, we are learning this beautiful song by Florence and the Machine. It is from their 2009 album, Lungs, which is aptly named because you require a lot of lung capacity to belt out this tune!
Florence and the Machine are an English indie rock band that formed in London in 2007, consisting of lead vocalist Florence Welch, keyboardist Isabella Summers, guitarist Rob Ackroyd, harpist Tom Monger, and a collaboration of other musicians. You should definitely add them to your playlist!
The song "Dog Days Are Over" was inspired by this text installation from artist Ugo Rondinone, which lead singer Florence Welch kept seeing as she rode her bike every day over Waterloo Bridge.
The song is about hope and finding joy, even when times are tough. "Dog days" means times that are difficult, but they come to an end with the arrival of the horses. The song encourages people to keep pushing through the tough times. It is truly a beautiful song with an even more beautiful meaning, which is why I have chosen it for us to learn this term and perform at Presentation Day at the end of the year. Here is the YouTube lyric video, so that you can rehearse along with Florence and the Machine.

Dog Days Are Over (lyrics)
Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her stuck still no turning backShe hid around corners and she hid under bedsShe killed it with kisses and from it she fledWith every bubble she sank with her drinkAnd washed it away down the kitchen sink
The dog days are overThe dog days are doneThe horses are comingSo you better run
Run fast for your mother, run fast for your fatherRun for your children, for your sisters and brothersLeave all your love and your longing behindYou can't carry it with you if you want to survive
The dog days are overThe dog days are doneCan you hear the horses?'Cause here they come
And I never wanted anything from youExcept everything you had and what was left after that too, ohHappiness hit her like a bullet in the backStruck from a great height by someone who should know better than that
The dog days are overThe dog days are doneCan you hear the horses?'Cause here they come
Run fast for your mother, run fast for your fatherRun for your children, for your sisters and brothersLeave all your love and your longing behindYou can't carry it with you if you want to survive
The dog days are overThe dog days are doneCan you hear the horses?'Cause here they come
The dog days are overThe dog days are doneThe horses are comingSo you better run

They were popular all around the world, spreading their message of Girl Power!
Mrs Bowman was, and still is, a big Spice Girls fan!

We are going to learn the lyrics to one of their boppiest pop songs, Who Do You Think You Are. The song, which was written by the Spice Girls, Paul Wilson, and Andy Watkins, is all about superstars getting trapped in the world of fame.

Here is a video of the Spice Girls performing Who Do You Think You Are in Istanbul in 1997:

Here is the song with lyrics for us to practise singing along to:

The race is on to get out of the bottomThe top is high so your roots are forgottenGiving is good as long as you're gettingWhat's driving you is ambition I'm betting

Shine Bright Like a Diamond

The next song that we will rehearse is 'Diamonds' by Rihanna.

The song was written by Sia and released by Rihanna in 2012. It became a huge hit and is one of Rihanna's many well-known tracks. In an interview about the meaning of the song, Rihanna said, "I think a lot of people are afraid of being happy because of what others might think of it. They're afraid to embrace that and embrace themselves and love themselves and do what they love and do what makes them happy. My story is definitely going to be a happily ever after, no matter what."

Most recently, Rihanna closed out her 2023 Super Bowl halftime show performance with a very sparkly rendition of "Diamonds" augmented by an elaborate lighting rig and fans who activated the flashlight feature on their phones from the stands.

Here is a beautiful performance by One Voice Choir of Diamonds that we will be tweaking for our performance:

Here is our backing track:

Here are the lyrics to Diamonds:

Key
Aqua: Small groupPurple: EdenGreen: LotteYellow: OdieOrange: Sia
Blue: Marlia, Luciana, Bianca
Everything else: whole choir

Shine bright like a diamond

Shine bright like a diamond

Find light in the beautiful sea

I choose to be happy

You and I, you and I

We're like diamonds in the sky

You're a shooting star I see

A vision of beauty (beauty)

When you’re near me (near me), I'm alive

We're like diamonds in the sky

I knew that we'd become one right away

Oh, right away (oh, right away)

At first sight I felt the energy of sun rays

I saw the life inside your eyes

Shine bright, tonight you and I / tonight… you and I

You’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky

Eye to eye, so alive/ (so alive)

We're beautiful like diamonds in the sky

Shine bright, shine bright like a diamond / (shine bright tonight)

In the sky, shine bright like a diamond

Shine bright like a diamond, Shine bright like a diamond

We're beautiful like diamonds in the sky

Eye to eye

Shine bright like a diamond, Shine bright like a diamond

We're beautiful like diamonds in the sky

Choralfest!

We are performing 3 songs for Choralfest:
- The Fruit Song
- Imagine
- Don't Stop Believin'

Choralfest have not given us an official day as of yet, but we will compete either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday Week 2 Term 2 (May 2nd, 3rd, or 4th).

Parents will be invited to attend.

Welcome to 2023!

Alright choir people! It's time to hit the ground running with a challenge - harmonies!

You will need to decide if you would prefer to sing the low or high part for our first performance song 'Imagine'. This song was originally written this guy, John Lennon.

John Lennon was a member of a very famous band called The Beetles. They changed the world of music throughout the 1960's and onward.

We are going to sing one of Lennon's more famous songs for the Recognition Assembly Monday Week 11 (April 3). The lyrics ask us to imagine a world where there is peace and harmony. We will be singing the version by Glee.

This is what it will sound like all together as a choir:

This is what the lower part sounds like:

This is what the higher part sounds like:

And finally, this is the backing track that we will perform to:

Lyrics:

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothin' to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Livin' life in peace
Yoo-hoo-ooh

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
Yoo-hoo-ooh

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
And the world will live as one

Term 4

Presentation Day
Ready for another performance with band? We will be singing 'Don't Stop Believin' by Journey.

I will update the structure and lyrics when we work this out with the band, but or now, let's learn the entire song!

Lyrics
Just a small town girlLivin' in a lonely worldShe took the midnight train going anywhereJust a city boyBorn and raised in South DetroitHe took the midnight train going anywhere
A singer in a smokey roomA smell of wine and cheap perfumeFor a smile they can share the nightIt goes on and on and on and on
Strangers waitin'Up and down the boulevardTheir shadows searchin' in the nightStreetlights, peopleLivin' just to find emotionHidin', somewhere in the night
Workin' hard to get my fillEverybody wants a thrillPayin' anything to roll the diceJust one more time
Some'll win, some will loseSome are born to sing the bluesWhoa, the movie never endsIt goes on and on and on and on
Strangers waitin'Up and down the boulevardTheir shadows searchin' in the nightStreetlights, peopleLivin' just to find emotionHidin', somewhere in the night
Don't stop believin'Hold on to that feelin'Streetlights, people
Don't stop believin'Hold onStreetlights, people
Don't stop believin'Hold on to that feelin'Streetlights, people

Spring Spectacular

We will have an amazing performance evening for choir and band on Wednesday Week 9 (September 14) from 4:30 pm.

We will be performing:
  • Seasons (both choirs)
  • Mango Tree
  • Brighter Days
  • Took the Children Away
  • Rolling in the Deep (with band)

Took them Away - Archie Roach
Red = Part 1
Blue = Part 2
Green = Part 3
Purple = Solo
This story's right, this story's true
I would not tell lies to you
Like the promises they did not keep
And how they fenced us in like sheep.
Said to us come take our hand
Sent us off to mission land.
Taught us to read, to write and pray
Then they took the children away,

Took the children away,
The children away.
Snatched from their mother's breast
Said this is for the best
Took them away.
The welfare and the policeman
Said you've got to understand
We'll give them what you can't give
Teach them how to really live.
Teach them how to live they said
Humiliated them instead
Taught them that and taught them this
And others taught them prejudice.

You took the children away
The children away
Breaking their mothers heart
Tearing us all apart
Took them away
One dark day on Framingham
Come and didn't give a damn
My mother cried go get their dad
He came running, fighting mad
Mother's tears were falling down
Dad shaped up and stood his ground.
He said 'You touch my kids and you fight me'
And they took us from our family.

Took us away
They took us away
Snatched from our mother's breast
Said this was for the best
Took us away.
Instrumental
Told us what to do and say
Told us all the white man's ways
Then they split us up again
And gave us gifts to ease the pain
Sent us off to foster homes
As we grew up we felt alone
Cause we were acting white
Yet feeling black
One sweet day all the children came back
The children came back
The children came back
Back where their hearts grow strong
Back where they all belong
The children came back
Said the children come back
The children come back
Back where they understand
Back to their mother's land
The children come back
Back to their mother
Back to their father
Back to their sister
Back to their brother
Back to their people
Back to their land
All the children come back
The children come back
The children come back
Yes I came back.

Backing Track:

Rolling in the Deep - Adele (amended for band)
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, it's bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go 'head and sell me out and I'll lay your ship bare
See how I'll leave with every piece of you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out the dark
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could've had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside
Of your hands
And you played it
To the beat
Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you've sown

We could've had it all
We could've had it all
It all, it all, it all

We could've had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside
Of your hands
And you played it
To the beat
We could've had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside
Of your hands
And you played it
To the beat

Welcome to Choir 2022!

Welcome wonderful choir friends! I am so excited to see some beautiful faces returning to choir this year, as well as some new students joining us.

Last year we missed out on a lot of singing together, so let's make this the best year yet!

We will start the year off by learning some fun rounds and singing some of our new favourite songs for warm ups. We will also learn the Awabakal National Anthem to sing at special assemblies.

Our performance song this term will be Brighter Days by Emeli Sande. In these tricky times, sometimes we just need a bit of brightness!
Here it is!

Backing Tracks in lower keys

Brighter Days

Red = Part 1
Blue = Part 2
Other colours = solos
We've seen it all                              (Iris)
The tears have fallen

And every step is on the edge        (Juni)
And we're so confused                   (Dana)
We don't understand

It feels like this night won't end        (Aisha)
But there's gonna be brighter days
Brighter days
I'll keep you lifted when you're losing faith
There's gonna be brighter days
Brighter days
Though it seems distant, know the world will change
To brighter days (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
The world will change
So don't you worry, there's still hope left
If the pain gets heavy, if you need a friend
I'll be holding you steady, my love won't end
And I'll be counting the seconds 'til we meet again
Yeah, there's gonna be
Brighter days
Brighter days
I'll keep you lifted when you're losing faith
There's gonna be brighter days
Brighter days
Though it seems distant, know the world will change
To brighter days (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
The world will change
To brighter days (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
The world will change
Oh, all of a sudden sun will start to shine on you
Know you've been running but now it's time for your breakthrough
I'll tell you something, it's not all for nothing, it's true
Hey, you'll see it soon
There's gonna be
Brighter days                            (Franki)
Brighter days
I'll keep you lifted when you're losing faith

There's gonna be
Brighter days
Brighter days
Though it seems distant, know the world will change
To brighter days (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
The world will change (the world will change) (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
To brighter days (oh)
The world will change
To brighter days

Term 2 Warm Up Song

Here are the lyrics to the Seasons round we will perform Term 1 Week 11

Seasons Go Round
Words & music by Glyn Lehmann

Summer, Autumn*, Winter, Spring
Round and round and round again

Seasons come and seasons go
Bring the sunshine, rain and snow

Tell the trees to change their leaves
When to sleep and when to grow

Awabakal National Anthem

Welcome to choir 2021!

Welcome back wonderful choir friends! I am so excited to fill the halls of Tighes Hill with our gorgeous voices again after a very quiet year last year.

This term we are tackling the incredible artist Sia, with her new song 'Together'. This will challenge our vocal chords a lot, and has a few opportunities to split into two parts.

The first video below includes Sia's vocals. The second video is the backing track we will be using. Try to practice with both versions.

Together

Ooh, together
We can take it higher
I can hear the thunder
Comin' from your mouth and I know my number's up
Give me some Stevie Wonder
Quick, put it on before we go under
I can see the lightning
Coming from your ears, yeah, I see you're frightened
I can see The Lion Sleeps Tonight in the tears you're crying
Ooh
Can't love me unless you love you too
Treat yourself like nothin' but a fool
Can't love me unless you love you too
Love you too
Come now, set the past on fire
Stand up, raise your face to the sky, my love
Together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher
Come now, set the past on fire
Stand up, raise your face to the sky, my love
Together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher
I can see the rainbow
Coming from your heart and it's all okay so
Come now, see you're my angel
Say "Bye" to the past, "Hello" to tomorrow
Ooh
Can't love me unless you love you too
Treat yourself like nothin' but a fool
Can't love me unless you love you too
Love you too
Come now, set the past on fire
Stand up, raise your face to the sky, my love
Together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher
Come now, set the past on fire
Stand up, raise your face to the sky, my love
Together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher
I want love, I wanna give it
I want love, please deliver it
I want love, I wanna give it
I want love, please deliver it
I want love, I wanna give it
I want love, please deliver it
I want love, I wanna give it
I want love, please deliver it
Come now, set the past on fire
Stand up, raise your face to the sky, my love
Together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher
Come now, set the past on fire
Stand up, raise your face to the sky, my love
Together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher
Ooh, together, we can take it higher

Term 3

Hello 3-6 Choir! For the beginning of this term we will be focusing on world music and rounds.
Tue Tue is a traditional Ghanaian folk song with some unison, harmony and canon (rounds).

As chosen and voted for by the choir, we will also be learning the song 'Rushing Back' by Flume and Vera Blue.

Rushing Back

I always let the days slip away, I should have been making up my mind
I never opened up, took it all in and now I'm running out of time
Sometimes I dream about going back, keeping all the things I left behind
But now I know you can't change the past, way too young to know the reason why
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
I feel the gravity pulling me faster than it ever has before
When I was seventeen, nicotine loving had me rushing out the door
I try to hold it back, take a breath, looking at old pictures on the floor
But I hear everything telling me, you don't have the time you gotta go
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
All the years, all the issues
All the eyes I have looked into
The stages and the love
All comes rushing back at once, ah
I always let the days slip away, I should have been making up my mind
I never opened up, took it all in, and now I'm running out of time
Sometimes I dream about going back, keeping all the things I left behind
But now I know you can't change the past, way too young to know the reason why
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back (I always)
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back (I always)
And it all comes rushing back, rushing back

Welcome to 2020!

Welcome wonderful choir friends! I am so excited to see some beautiful faces returning to choir this year, as well as some new students joining us - how luck are we!

Our first performance this year is Harmony Day. Our song to support this focuses on friendship, extending a helping hand and reminding our friends that there is always a bright side to look towards.

For this reason our song of the term is - Never Seen the Rain by Tones and I

Here is the karaoke version once you think you've figured out the lyrics and melody.

Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
All your life now
You couldn't be mad about it
You've been sailing, sailing‚ ooh
You couldn't be sad about it
And it's been all this time
And you haven't lived without it
You are shining‚ shining‚ it seems though
That your life, you've found it

[Chorus]
No, but you never
No‚ you never seen the rain
No, but you never, no‚ you never seen the rain
And it gets you down
But that's okay
You've been pushed 'round
You feel the pain
And when you fall
Just lean on me
'Cause you've never known
Never seen
Never smelt
Never felt
The rain, rain
Never felt the rain, rain, rain

[Verse 2]
It's a cold dark night and
No one's tryin' to find ya
You're just coasting, coasting by
'Cause nothing seems to mind ya

[Chorus]
No, but you never
No, you never seen the rain
No, but you never, no, you never seen the rain
And it gets you down
But that's okay
You've been pushed 'round
You feel the pain
And when you fall
Just lean on me
'Cause you've never known
Never seen
Never smelt
Never felt
The rain, rain
Never felt the rain, rain, rain

[Outro]
And it gets you down
But that's okay
You've been pushed 'round
You feel the pain
And when you fall
Just lean on me
'Cause you've never known
Never seen
Never smelt
Never felt
The rain, rain
Never felt the rain, rain, rain

Listen to the video below for the soprano harmony part.

Backing Track

[Verse 1]
I was lost, but you found me
Hiding in the shadows from my destiny
And you saw things that no one could see
You saved me when I was my worst enemy

[Chorus]
It feels so good to be alive
Just you and me tonight
Don't wake me up from this high
What a beautiful life
I heard your heart call mine
And then all the stars aligned
Don't wake me up from this high
What a beautiful life

[Verse 2]
Spread through me like a wild flame
I feel it in my veins
I'll never ever be the same
I'll never be the same
Cheers to the thing money can't buy
Can't buy what I feel inside
This thing, I can't deny
Our pretty little paradise

[Chorus]
It feels so good to be alive
Just you and me tonight
Don't wake me up from this high
What a beautiful life
I heard your heart call mine
And then all the stars aligned
Don't wake me up from this high
What a beautiful life

[Post-Chorus]
Woah-oo-oh
Woah-oo-oh
Woah-oo-oh
What a beautiful life

[Bridge]
What a beautiful, what a beautiful, what a beautiful life
What a beautiful, what a beautiful, what a beautiful life
What a beautiful, what a beautiful, what a beautiful life
What a beautiful, what a beautiful, what a beautiful life

[Chorus]
It feels so good to be alive
Just you and me tonight
Don't wake me up from this high
What a beautiful life
I heard your heart call mine
And then all the stars aligned
Don't wake me up from this high
What a beautiful life

Cluster Choir

Very exciting news! Cluster Choir is just around the corner and preparations are being made by the teachers in our local schools. The theme this year is 'Raise the Mercury'.

Tighes Hill will be singing Pompeii by Bastille as our individual song.

Here are the songs we will be singing as a cluster choir all together. The songs will be arranged a bit differently to the YouTube clips here, but are a good place to start practicing to learn the melody and words:

Below are the actual Cluster Choir arrangements for our songs:

Walking on Sunshine

Saltwater

Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Beds Are Burning

Song of the term: Pompeii - Bastille

Remember - we have now changed the song Pompeii so that it is shorter for Cluster Choir.
Please look at the lyrics and learn the changes.

End of Term 1

For the rest of the term, the choir will be learning different rounds.

The first round is about the seasons. Its melody and lyrics resemble that of an older folk song - something which may be new for our students!
This song works on intonation, steps and singing in different parts.

Seasons Go Round
Words & music by Glyn Lehmann

Summer, Autumn*, Winter, Spring
Round and round and round again

Seasons come and seasons go
Bring the sunshine, rain and snow

Tell the trees to change their leaves
When to sleep and when to grow

Our second round is a funny silly song about fruit. The songs works on jumping between notes and singing in different parts.

Mango, Mango, Mango
(The Fruit Canon)

Round

Mango, mango, mango, mango,
Mango, mango, mango!
Mango, mango, mango, mango,
Mango, mango, mango!
Kiwi-kiwi-kiwi, kiwi-kiwi-kiwi
Kiwi-kiwi-kiwi, kiwi-kiwi-kiwi!
Pineapple, bananas, pineapple, umm!
Pineapple, bananas, pineapple, umm!

Here is a video of how it sounds all together.

Next Performance: Harmony Day Week 8 21/03/19

Song of the term: Lean on Me (Glee Version)

Video to learn the melody to, or practice your harmony to:

Remember, this is a lot slower than our version but you should learn the melody and practice your harmony with it.

Recording to learn the structure of the song to:

Remember that this has a lot of other harmonies and lead vocals in the background. Try not to get confused and start singing a harmony or lead vocal part we are not doing.

Backing Track (no vocals):

Lyrics:

Um um um um
um um um um
um um um um um [x2]

Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me!
when you're not strong
and I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
for it won't be long
'till I'm gonna need
somebody to lean on

Please! (please)
swallow your pride (pride)
if I have things
you need to borrow
(For) for no one can fill
those of your needs
that you wont let show

So just call on me brother
when you need a hand
we all need somebody to lean on!
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
we all need somebody to lean on!

Lean on me
when you're not strong
I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
for it wont be long
'till I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

You just call on me brother
when you need a hand
we all need somebody to lean on!
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
we all need somebody to lean on!
Lean on me

If (If)
there is a load! (there is a load)
you have to bare (you have to bare)
that you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
if you just call me

Call me (I'm calling)
Call me (when you need a friend)
Call me (call me)
Call me (call me) (when you need a friend)
Call me (when you need a friend)
Call me (if you need a friend)
Call me (any time of day)
Call me

It won't be long till I'm Gonna need somebody to lean on, lean on, lean on
lean on lean on lean on me when you need a friend
lean on lean on lean on me lean on me
lean on lean on lean on me
I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
I'm gonna need somebody to lean on
Yeah

Hi THPS Choir, I'm so excited to start singing with you all! It is very important that you practice your songs at home as well as at school, so find some time each week to have a sing! Maybe that's while you drive to school, or when you shower at night. It could be when you help your big people by washing up or putting away the laundry :) Make sure you are not late to choir practice. Wait at the silver seats until I come to get you at 8:30.
